“Where can your spatial model be trusted? Reliable validation of spatial machine learning” by Jakub Nowosad Earth Observation Summer School 2026 17 Aug 2026 – 21 Aug 2026, Istanbul, Turkey https://opengeohub.org/events/earth-observation-summer-school-2026 Spatial machine learning models are widely used in Earth Observation and environmental mapping, yet their reported accuracy is often overly optimistic due to spatial autocorrelation and inappropriate validation strategies. This workshop introduces practical approaches for evaluating spatial models more reliably, focusing on spatially aware validation and identifying where predictions can be trusted. Participants will learn about prediction domain-adaptive cross-validation and the area of applicability, illustrated with examples in R. The workshop combines conceptual explanations, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.
